Parasitic Battery Draw
Saturday, April 02, 2011 11:28 AM
Im looking for some help/suggestions on how to diagnose a parasitic draw on my battery. I have an optima red top, and if left alone overnight, it will not even have enough juice to start my car. I have aftermarket stereo, alarm, powerlocks, gauges (i think that is all currently). I will be adding more shortly, but want to get this under control before i add to the diag problem. Any suggestions?

You can't load test an Optima. The best they can do is put a multimeter on it and say "yup it's got 12+ volts. I have seen 3 Red Tops stop being able to crank cars after short lives. Do you have a second battery to try? Toss it in, leave it sitting over night, see if that helps. I don't trust those pile of @!#$ red tops for DD's any more.

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

When I worked at advance, we saw a ton of red tops come through....yellow tops didn't seem to have much of a problem though, unless they had been completely drained several times, and they would die out....I would recommend trying another battery and see if the problem is still there

Optima is garbage. I have been through 6, discussed it in other posts. Almost guarantee that is your problem. Try another battery.
