I installed a kenwood 720 watt 4 channel amp (rms 60 x 4). I connected it to my kenwood 6x9 500 watts (rms 90 x 2) and kenwood 4x6 (rms 20 x 2). When it was on low volume it was fine as soon as I turn it up the 4x6 started to smoke now the sound is distorted. Did the the amp cause the 4x6 to smoke? Is the amp to powerful?
No.
you caused the 4x6 to smoke. You're the one in charge of the volume knob.
Read the sticky at the top of this forum, specifically the section on amp gain setting.
Your right, this was my first installation of sounds, I thought adjusting the gain was optional. Thanks though
