Connecting hazard lights to car alarm
Sunday, February 20, 2005 11:29 PM
Ive just installed an alarm in my car. It works perfectly except I DONT KNOW HOW TO HOOK IT UP TO THE HAZARD LIGHTS so they flash when the doors are locked/ unlocked. The control unit has a single wire which provides a positive (+) curent flashing once for lock and twice for unlock. I have tried a few combinations using a relay but i dont really know which wires to connect them too. I have an 86 corolla if that helps anyone. Do I need to hook two relays up so they both trigger a current over the indicator wires of each side or is there another way???
Any help / diagrams would be greatly appreciated

no relays neccessary, look for a dark green wire in the drivers kick panel. that is the aprking light circuit which will flash the exterior and dash lights as if the parking lights were turned on.

Sounds like he wants the signal lights, not the parking lights. Different wires.

There's an easy way, and a hard way. Easy way is to use two diodes off that wire, to the light and dark blue wires off the turn signal switch. Actually, now that I think about it.. you might need four diodes because I think the rear turn signals/brake lights are combined on the yellow/green wires.

Harder way would be to figure out how to turn on the hazards electronic relay... it's above the brake pedal (green colored little box). I don't know how to go about doing that... I used the diode method.

The last time I hooked up a car alarm, it had the same setup as mentioned above. It said to use the parking lights, and that is the easiest circuit to use as typically they are all in parallel, and no diodes should be required. On the car I had the system in, it also flashed the dashboard lights along with the parking lights, but I think it was just power feeding back through the headlight switch. It worked fine for a few years, with no problems. I think that many people assume it's the hazard lights, but the parking lights are better anyway, as they're visible from all corners of the vehicle.
