Subs, can't remove seat.
Thursday, February 24, 2005 1:34 PM
So I'm wanting to put an audio system in my car. But my main problem is running into subs. There is someone riding in the back seat of my 2001 cav 3 days of the week so removing that back seat is out of the question.

I thought about installing it under the rear seat, but I didn't know it was so small (like tiny small), and that might be where the gas tank is contained now that I think about it. I'm just used to my old jeep that I got rid of. It had enough room under the rear seats for subs and it would have been awesome.

So where would be the ideal location for them? Is there any options besides the trunk? If the trunk rout is taking to I make the enclosure face away from the seats, or have the speakers pointed right at them? Will this muffle it terribly and loose a lot of response? I just want tight punch bass, but I do want it clear and distinguished. Which I know you can't have it all. But what are my options?

I have the same problem. I'm working on it right now. View the "inward firing sub question" thread to see what I've got planned. Maybe It will give you an Idea

just make them fire towards the trunk. hits just as hard IMO. when i drop the seat it hit a little harder, but if someone gets in my car, i just pop the seat up and then when they get out, i drop it down again.

I'm guessing you guys used some kind of sound dampening, cause my trunk rattles like a bizznatch if I leave it sealed up in the trunk firing back.

well, my subs were rear firing in my car for the 4 years i owned it. it rattled lik heck, the third brakelight would rattle against the window, and the trunk went nuts...it was that way from the moment i got it.

but, as of tonight, the new system is in, and the same set up, with NO rattles on ym new 05. now, it could be cause the car was a lil older on my old 97, so the seals werent as good. not sure.

but,at any rate, if you dynomat or insulate....you wont have to worry. or, if you just do what they say and drop the seat for shows or when you want to bump, no rattles.

much simpler and cheaper than front firing subs. besides, you talk to alot of car audio guys, and they will tell you, while bass sounds cleaner when fired into the cab, it doesnt hit any harder. subs need a enclosed airspace to develop. dont belive me, open your trunk when subs are firing out the rear and stand 10 feet away. close the trunk and open your doors and stand 10 feet away. big differance.

now, while sound is clearer, and there is the cab of the car to radiate sound through...the subs ussually hit harder when they have something to bounce off of, like the inside of a trunk.

but, if you got the time and dont need a back seat, go for it,lol.

I got spoiled on the clean sound in my friend's truck. No trunk equals in-cab sub. I will agree that it doesn't hit harder, but the impact is cleaner and more focused when the cone is lookin at you.

Well From personal experience with cavi's i like the subs firing towards a well dynamated, fatmated, insulated surface with a port firing towards the vent on the passenger side it totally eats up that corner. But i also enjoy the occasional wall in the trunk it is quite clean.

Right now i have an s15l7 in my trunk ported towards the passenger side its decently loud but i can still concentrate on driving so i guess a bigger amp is in order????maybe a 1200.1D

actually if you fire the subs forward, then seal up every opening between the trunk and the interior, firing forward will hit allot harder then firing backwards. reason being you are now compresing allot smaller space, and spl is all about pressure, the smaller the space the less energy you need to pressurise it.

what your talking about redrocket doesnt have anything to do with the sound bouncing off of the trunk, it has to do with cancelation, with the sub firing forward and it is not enclosed the sound waves that bounced forwards will eventually meet up with the sound waves that bounced backwards causing cancellation. if i can find the link i'll post it showing what i'm talking about in more deapth.

what about those free air subs or whatever. they jsut need to be sealed from back or something?i dont know much about them but i think you could jsut like make a board between your seat and the trunk and have it like that. im not sure though. ill be listening cuz my trunk id for my bike so im looking for an alternative spot for subs too.

it's not ghetto, it's "in progress"

heres a good example of what i was talking about with the cancelation. thanks to the shape for finding this on the web,

<img src="http://www.photoalloccasion.com/img/cancel1.gif">

this is also how infinite baffle (freeair) works, you basically seal the interior up from the trunk and this seperates the front wave and back wave of a infinite baffle system.

not sure on the new cavvies but you might be able to replace the rear seat with a set of buckets, that will open your trunk but leave seating positions, if your really skilled(not sure on the braces that you guys have behind the rear seat, you could build a box that fires into the back of the two seats and ports in the center into the cabin

so why can't you just put subs in the trunk?? a pair of 12's can easily be fit into less then 2 cubes sealed.

my sub is in the trunk right now. As SomeGuys said, it rattles like an old woman with Parkinsons. I drug tested for circuit city Monday, so I figure by this weekend I'll be working. Then i can get dynamat, a head unit, and most importantly, money to make my new box. After that, I'll spend a few hours finding every leak in my trunk to seal it up. Then the thump will be better than ever.

sounds like instead of moving the subs outta the trunk, you just need some deadening.

I'm going to deaden, and I'm not completely moving the sub out of the trunk. It's gonna be in th back seat. Check this. http://students.uta.edu/ja/jad9549

dynamat is WAY overpriced, sorry, get some roofing insulator or foam sheets and just pad the surfaces of your trunk and your set to go

Good Idea, I have never thought of that. The guys at circuit city told me it was bad to face them towards you if the seat is up. They said I would be better off facing the subs towards the rear of the car.

its really a matter of personal taste. I just got a job installing at CC, and not all the installers are up to par on subwoofers.

hey hear is an idea.....

why dont you just build a box with you subs facing the rear of the car and port the box up though the rear deck. that way you could leave the seat up all the time and still have good bass responce

or.....

a sealed box firing the rear. put two ports in rear deck that way you still have great bass responce with seat up and awesome bass responce with seat down, there you go.

i have 2 10's in a sealed box facing the rear and i ride with the seat down like almost always but when i have to i put it up and its sounds ok just lacks a little more punch. i also like riding with seat down becuase my amp is mounted on the back of my seat and it keeps it runnin cooler. and its a huge amp,lol

oh did i mention it looks good, lol

yeah, but rollin' with the seat dropped looks kinda ghetto. I'd rather not have to worry with putting the seat up and down. So, I build a seat-box to replace the seat. Don't have to worry about dropping the seat, and it looks good too.
