ECU Modifications on Z24 (98)
Tuesday, March 01, 2005 2:33 PM
I have been looking into Car PCs recently, and I'm also thinking about buying a '98 Cavalier Z24. While looking for modules for the PC (such as dynamic information displayed on-screen obtained through the OBDII interface), I came across a website that used to do ECU modifications on a certain car model. They offered to do such things as reducing engine RPMs when the clutch is pressed, entering a special sequence of gas and brake pedal before engine starts, and modifying fluid ratios. These modifications (from what I've found) seem to be engine specific.

Now, I was thinking of taking out the ECU chip, soldering a socket into where it used to be, and having the chip in that. The socket could also be connected to a flash box (to reprogram the ECU). I was thinking of having a computer connected to all that, so that I could reprogram my ECU on the fly.

Has anyone heard of this being done before?

As far as I know it's not possible to take out the ECU 'chip' as our cars do not have just a chip. I beleive you would have to replace the ENTIRE ecu, or reflash it, or something of that nature....

I was not aware that the ECU stored settings on multiple chips. I am not a really big car guy, I do mostly PC stuff. Replacing any ROM chips or modifying FlashROM chips, hacking the 'firmware' (if that's what you could call the ECU EPROM settings), this is the kind of stuff I'm into. Just seeing if anyone else has done this, so I wouldn't have to re-invent the wheel. Or chip .

Guess this means more work to do...

It simply isn't that easy..

And if it were... it would have been done by now and yes... people have attempted it.
